Well, what does it mean?
To have great enlightenment about illusion is to be a Buddha. In America, it seems as though people are always searching for an easy life. Then, just sit. When Buddhas become Buddhas, it is not necessary for them to be aware they are Buddhas. To some degree, this has been accomplished. In Zen terms we say honsho myoshu. For when you truly realize the dream, you realize that your life and the whole phenomenal universe are just a dream. Guishan said, "Listen to this old monastic's dream." The experience, the realization, and the living, right transmission of the Buddhist Dharma is like this. Throughout the Book of Rinzai, Master Rinzai says, "We, the students of Dharma, must have true insight." When people seek the Dharma [outside themselves] they are immediately far removed from its true location. How do we make our practice really effective? So you could say "work- ," and that dash is there for almost everything. Similarly, if you try to understand the nature of phenomena only through your own confused perception you will mistakenly think that your nature is eternal. To me, this is equivalent to Master Rinzai's saying, "Attain true insight." Seeing the variety of cravings and beings all around us. All those things I'm going to want to do. In the Diamond Sutra, the Buddha concludes his teaching on impermanence with the following: "Thus shall you think of this fleeting world-a star at dawn, a bubble in a stream, a flash of lightning in a summer cloud, a flickering lamp, a phantom and a dream." Listen carefully.Can you he In his poem, Wumen says: That's the only food that can really satisfy. The answers have the same source as the questions. Well, it's only your mind that's creating this reality. Right is a dream; wrong too is a dream. Fish in the ocean find the water endless and birds think the sky is without limits. That is my whole training in Zen koans. The exciting thing about all of this is that new upayas [skillful means] have to be developed with this non-dualistic understanding in mind. That's a very difficult thing.
